German: from Middle High German runge ‘staff’, ‘stick’ (Old
High German runga). The precise sense of the surname is not
clear, but the vocabulary word was used in particular of the support
rung on the side of a (ladder) wagon; thus it is possibly a metonymic
occupational name for a wheelwright.
