English: habitational name from either of two places so called: in
Essex and Worcestershire. In both cases the name probably derives from
the genitive case of Old English ræcc ‘hunting dog’ (perhaps
a byname) + Old English ford ‘ford’, but its development has
been influenced by the common French place name composed of the
elements roche ‘rock’ + fort ‘strong’ (Latin
fortis).
