The Saint Columb Major and Roche placenames derive from Middle Cornish rid ‘ford’ + the plural form of heligen ‘willow tree’. The Constantine and Saint Hilary placenames derive from Middle Cornish rid + an adjectival form of hal ‘moor marsh’ or tal ‘brow front end’.
