Cornish: habitational name from either of two places called Retallick in Saint Columb Major and Roche parishes or either of two places called Retallack in Constantine and Saint Hilary parishes all in Cornwall. The Saint Columb Major and Roche placenames derive from Middle Cornish rid ‘ford’ + the plural form of heligen ‘willow tree’. The Constantine and Saint Hilary placenames derive from Middle Cornish rid + an adjectival form of hal ‘moor marsh’ or tal ‘brow front end’.
