English: nickname from Middle English outlawe ‘outlaw’ (from
Old Norse útlagi). (When a sentence of outlawry was passed
on someone in the Middle Ages it meant that they no longer had the
protection of the law.) According to Reaney and Wilson this was also
occasionally used as a personal name; they cite the example of someone
called Hutlage.
