Oe Name Meaning
Japanese (Ōe): usually written 大江 ‘large inlet’. It is found mostly in western Japan and the Ryūkyūan island of Yaeyama where it is written 大得. An ancient family of scholars and statesmen one branch is ancestral to the Mori clan of Chōshū (now part of Yamaguchi prefecture). Listed in the Shinsen shōjiroku as 大枝 ‘large branch’. Commonly Romanized as Oye in older immigrant families. Chinese: variant Romanization of the surname 余 (mainly found in Indonesia) possibly based on its Hokkien or Teochew pronunciation see Yu
