Nolin Family History

Nolin Name Meaning

French: from a shortened form of a personal name such as Renolet a pet form of Renaud . Compare Nowlin . Swedish: probably a habitational name from placenames beginning with Nol- (from nord ‘north’) + the adjectival suffix -in a derivative of Latin -in(i)us ‘relating to’ (compare Nolen ). However at least in one case it is derived from a place called Skällsäter by Latinization of Skäll- erroneously thought to be derived from Swedish skälla ‘little bell’ Latin nola. The placename is in fact derived either from Swedish dialect skäll ‘barren infertile’ or from Swedish sköld ‘shield’.
