English (chiefly southern Yorkshire and Lancashire): habitational
name from any of several places called Mos(e)ley in central, western,
and northwestern England. The obvious derivation is from Old English
mos ‘peat bog’ + leah ‘woodland clearing’, but the
one in southern Birmingham (Museleie in Domesday Book) had as
its first element Old English mus ‘mouse’, while one in
Staffordshire (Molesleie in Domesday Book) had the genitive
case of the Old English byname Moll.
