element clearly being Old English micel ‘large’,
‘great’. Middleton Baggot and Middleton Priors in Shropshire have
early spellings that suggest gem¯ðhyll (from
gem¯ð ‘confluence’ + hyll ‘hill’) + tun
as the origin.
