Scottish and northern Irish: shortened Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac an t-Sagairt ‘son of the priest’ from sagart ‘priest’ (a borrowing of Latin sacerdos). Married clergy were not uncommon even in pre-Reformation times. The surname is now often further shortened to Taggart .
