Northern Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Gafraidh or
Mac Gofraidh ‘son of Gafradh’, a Gaelic form of the Old
Norse personal name Guðfróðr, composed of the elements
guð ‘god’ + fróðr ‘wise’, and equivalent to
English Godfrey. An alternative Gaelic form of the personal
name is Gothraidh, which gave rise to McGorry. In
Ireland this is a branch of the Maguires of Fermanagh.
