an original British name Lindo- ‘lake’ + Latin colonia
‘settlement’, ‘colony’. The place was an important administrative
center during the Roman occupation of Britain and in the Middle Ages
it was a center for the manufacture of cloth, including the famous
‘Lincoln green’.
