Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): metonymic occupational name from Yiddish lam ‘lamb’ with the suffix -er and umlaut (compare Lamm ). Breton (mainly Le Mer): status name or occupational name for a maire (‘mayor’) or a nickname for someone thought to resemble a maire from a Breton derivative of Old French mair(e) (see Maire ) with the French masculine definite article le. French (mainly Maine-et-Loire): regional variant of Lemaire a cognate of 2 above and in North America probably also an altered form of this. Compare Lamer and Lemar .
