former was named in Old English as ‘settlement by the watercourse’,
from Old English lad ‘watercourse’ + tun
‘enclosure’, ‘settlement’; the latter as ‘leek enclosure’ or ‘herb
garden’, from leac ‘leek’ + tun. Compare
