Japanese: written 窪 ‘sunken ground’ but mostly with characters used phonetically for example 久保 which literally means ‘long time preserve’. Found mostly in western Japan apparently taken from several habitational names. Many unrelated families descend from various branches of the Taira Minamoto and other great families. Czech and Slovak: from a variant of the personal name Kuba a pet form of Jakub (see Jacob ).
