Japanese: written 小島 ‘small island’. It is mostly found along the coast between Tokyo and Kyōto and in the Ryūkyū Islands; an alternate reading found farther east is Ojima. Another version 児島 ‘child island’ is found in western Japan while a 古島 ‘old island’ name also exists.
