Slovenian: nickname derived from kobaliti se ‘to walk or roll along awkwardly’ or based on kobal ‘astride’ an adverb of Italian origin. The surname may have also been an occupational name for a horseman or for a man in charge of horses derived directly from the Italian word cavallo ‘horse’ (compare Cavallo ). Czech and Slovak: from a derivative (pet form) of the personal name Koba a short form of Jakob (see Jacob ). Croatian: probably an importation of the Slovenian name in 1 above.
