Polish Ukrainian and Sorbian; Czech Slovak and Hungarian (Kabát): from Polish and Sorbian kabat Czech Slovak and Hungarian kabát ‘coat overcoat jerkin’ also ‘military uniform’ hence a metonymic occupational name for a maker of short coats or a nickname for a soldier. In Ukrainian the Polish loanword kabat also means ‘skirt’ and may have been applied as a nickname for an effeminate man.
