Finnish: ornamental name from joki ‘river’ (see Joki ) + the surname suffix -nen adopted widely during the national awakening of the 19th century by Finns without surnames in western southern and central Finland (compare Virtanen ). In some instances Jokinen arose as a surname from the farm name Jokela or from a placename beginning with Joki- or ending in -joki.
