The Jagiellonian royal house of Poland was founded by the Lithuanian Władysław Jagiełło (Vlodislav Jogaila; 1348–1434) whose dynasty ruled the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from 1386 to 157 In most cases Jagiełło was adopted by Poles as a surname to suggest a connection with the dynasty or in honor of royalty and the glorious period of Polish history that they represent.
