English (Flintshire and Denbighshire): from the Old Norse personal name Ingimund itself from the heroic name-element seen in such names as Ingle + mundr ‘bride-price’. The current main distribution in Northeast Wales and Chester is coincidentally close to the Wirral where Ingimund the Viking invaded in 90 Swedish: habitational name formed with man ‘man’ for someone from any of several places whose name is beginning with Ing- (e.g. Ingvalsby in the province of Uusimaa Swedish Nyland in Finland which consists of the personal name Ingivald and by ‘farm village’). This surname is also found in Finland. Americanized form of German Ingmann: perhaps a variant of Engmann (see Engman ).
