German: from the female personal name Ida of disputed etymology possibly from Old Norse idh ‘work activity’ or of the same origin as Old High German idis ‘(wise) woman’; it is thought by some that its variants overlap with those of hild ‘battle strife’. English: perhaps a variant of Hyder .
