Hussey Name Meaning

English: of Norman origin a nickname for someone who habitually wore a distinctive pair of boots or gaiters from Old French hosed hoset housé Middle English hosey hus(s)y ‘booted gaitered’ (from Latin hosatus). English: status name or nickname from Middle English hus(e)wyf ‘mistress of a family; wife of a householder’ (a compound of Old English hūs ‘house’ + wīf ‘woman’). Though originally a woman's name it is often found as a male surname presumably in a derogatory sense. The vocabulary word became hussie with the meaning ‘disreputable woman’ in the 16th century; the surname however is not associated with this meaning. Irish: shortened Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó hEodhusa ‘descendant of Eodhus’. This was the name of a bardic family associated with the Maguires of Fermanagh also Anglicized as Oswell or Oswald .
