All bearers of this surname in Korea are descended from the same ancestor. According to legend in AD 48 a sixteen-year-old Indian princess arrived by boat on the shores of Ch’angwŏn county in Kyŏngsang South province. The Karak kingdom's King Suro married her and out of respect for her origins allowed the second of their ten sons to take his mother's surname Hŏ.
