North German: habitational name for someone from Hegel near Oldenburg. Americanized form of German Högler: nickname derived from dialect hegl ‘nape of the neck’. Högler is a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar ). Slovenian: of Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) origin (see 4 above).
