English (Durham and Yorkshire): habitational name from Hebden in Linton (Yorkshire) probably from Old English hēope ‘rose hip’ or hēopa ‘bramble’ + denu ‘valley’. Roger de Mowbray granted the manor of Hebden to Uctred de Hebden a descendant of Uctred Earl of Northumberland (died 1016) in 1120.
