occupational name for a soldier who used a halberd (see 2); another is
that it may be from a Scandinavian personal name.French:
metonymic occupational name for a maker of halberds and similar
weapons, from Old French hallebarte ‘halberd’ (ultimately from
Middle High German helmbarde, from helm ‘handle’ +
barde ‘hatchet’).
