The place name is named as ‘the valley of the wolves’, from Arabic wadi ‘valley’, ‘riverbed’ + Latin lupi ‘wolves’. Guadalupe is the site of a Hieronymite convent founded in the 14th century, which possesses a famous image of the Virgin Mary.
