Polish (Górnik): occupational name from górnik ‘miner’. Polish (Górnik): topographic name derived from górny ‘upper part of a settlement’ (see Gorny ). Slovenian: topographic name for someone who lived on a hill derived from gora ‘mountain hill’ or a habitational name for someone from any of several places called with gora or with the adjective gornji ‘upper’. This surname is also found in Croatia (compare 4 below). Slovenian and Croatian: feudal status name for the steward of a vineyard derived from gora ‘hill planted with vines’.
