Polish and in some cases probably also Sorbian (Gaweł): from the personal name Gaweł derived from Latin Gallus (see Gall ) the name borne by a 7th-century Irish missionary who was very active in central Europe. The extra syllable was introduced by analogy with Latin Paulus which yielded Polish and (old) Sorbian Paweł. Compare Gavel and Czech Havel .
