Spanish (Flórez): probably a patronymic (developed via Fróilaz) from the medieval Visigothic personal name Froila a derivative of Gothic frauja ‘lord master’. Jewish (Sephardic): adoption of the name in 1 above at the moment of conversion to Roman Catholicism. After the return to Judaism (generations later) some descendants retained the name their families used as Catholics.
