Spanish and Portuguese (Eusébio): from the personal name
Eusebio (Greek Eusebios meaning ‘revered’, from
eu- ‘good’, ‘well’ + a derivative of sebesthai ‘to
honor’, ‘respect’). This was borne by a large number of early saints,
including a 5th-century friend of Jerome popularly credited with the
foundation of the monastery of Guadalupe. A 4th-century bishop of
Samosata in Syria who bore this name is one of many bearers of this
name venerated in the Orthodox Church.
