English German Welsh Jewish (Sephardic and Ashkenazic) and African (mainly Nigeria and Tanzania): from the Hebrew personal name Immanuel ‘God is with us’ found as a personal name in many European languages. In the Old Testament this is an epithet of God in the Book of Isaiah and in medieval Christian literature an alternative name for Christ. In Britain the surname is generally a 17th- and 18th-century coinage among Nonconformists especially in south Wales. Compare Emmanuel .
