French (northern France; also Dorémus) and Dutch (of French Huguenot origin): probably from d'Oresmieux or d'Oresmaux habitational names denoting someone from Oresmieux in Pas-de-Calais or Oresmaux in Somme respectively apparently reinterpreted as Doremus Dorémus under the influence of the Christian liturgic Latin phrase oremus ‘let us pray’ or its French derivative orémus ‘prayer’. Alternatively at least in Nord a patronymic with fused French preposition d(e) ‘of’ from the originally Flemish or Dutch nickname Oremus The surname Doremus is not found in the Netherlands anymore.
