Indian (northern states): from Sanskrit deva ‘deity lord’. This was a title used by ruling families in northern India. There is a Jat tribe called Deo. In northeastern India this name is spelled and pronounced Deb . Elsewhere a common variant is Dev . Italian: from a short form of the personal names Amadeo Laudadeo or Sperindeo of which only the first now remains in use as a personal name. Variant of Deyo 2 a surname of French origin (see Guyon ).
