Croatian: possibly a patronymic from the old Serbian personal name Butor which is believed to be derived from the name Butko (see Butkovic ) but could originally also be a nickname derived from the Turkish word bodur ‘not tall’. Alternatively a nickname derived from Croatian dialect butora ‘faggot bundle (of dry twigs)’.
