The placename which was formerly pronounced locally as Burlington is early recorded as Bretlinton ‘estate (Old English tūn) associated with a man called Berhtel’. The surname had apparently migrated to Norfolk and Essex by the late 16th century perhaps via the coastal trade on the eastern seaboard of England.
