South German (Bräu): from a shortened form of an agent noun denoting a brewer from Middle High German briuwen ‘to brew’. Catalan and southern French: nickname from the adjective brau meaning ‘brave fierce’ in Catalan and ‘wild’ in Occitan or from a homonymous noun meaning ‘bull’ both ultimately from Latin barbarus ‘barbarian ruffian’ (compare Spanish and Portuguese Bravo ).
