Dutch: mainly a habitational name from either of two villages called Beets in North Holland and Friesland. English: variant of Beet with post-medieval excrescent -s from the Middle English personal name Bete a pet form of Betris (see Beatrice ). In East Anglia however where the name is concentrated it is of Dutch origin (see 1 above) as evidenced by the census of 188 This surname is now rare in Britain. Probably an altered form of German Beetz .
