personal name Beorn + -ing- denoting association +
tun ‘settlement’. In the Somerset place name the first
element is an unattested Old English personal name Bara,
which also occurs, in the genitive form, as the first element of the
Cambridgeshire place name.Irish: adopted as an English
form of Gaelic Ó Bearáin (see Barnes 3).
