Barlas Family History
Barlas Name Meaning
Scottish (Perthshire): habitational name probably from Barloch near Milngavie (Stirlings) + post-medieval excrescent -s. The final syllable of Barloch will alternatively have been pronounced -low and -lie in Scots whence a variety of attested surname forms including Barlow Barlows Barlie Barliss Barles(s) and Barlas(s) mostly clustering in settlements near Blackruthven in Tibbermore parish (Perthshire) where the surname Barloche is first recorded in 1589. Greek: probably a nickname derived from parla ‘blabbering’ (from Italian parlare ‘to talk’). Alternatively perhaps a nickname derived from Aromanian bărliv ‘tormented long-suffering’. Slovak (Barlaš and Barláš): unexplained. Turkish: ornamental name from Barlas the name of the Mongolian (later Turkicized) tribe of which Tamerlane's father was a member from Mongolian barlas ‘brave’. Pakistani: from the Muslim personal name Barlas of Mongolian origin (see 4 above).
