English: from Middle English bare-fot ‘with bare feet barefooted’ (Old English bær ‘bare naked’ + fōt) a nickname for someone who was in the habit of going about his business unshod or used to signify friars pilgrims and those doing penance. In some instances possibly also an Americanized form (translation into English) of German Barfuss the very rare North German variant Barfoth the Danish cognates Barfod and Barfoed or Dutch Berrevoets and Bervoets.
