English: habitational name from any of various places called
Ashurst, from Old English æsc ‘ash tree’ + hyrst
‘wooded hill’. The most significant of these places are in Kent and
West Sussex, but in England the surname is now found chiefly in south
Lancashire, where it probably derives from Ashurst Beacon near
Wigan.
