Finnish: topographic and ornamental name from aro ‘hard,
relatively infertile ground’ or ‘wet meadow’, ‘swamp’, found both as a
place name and as a surname throughout Finland. In many cases the
surname was adopted during the name conversion movement in the 19th
and early 20th centuries, especially in southern Finland. KTM In the
U.S. this is also a shortened form of names such as Kiviaro, of
which the first element is kivi ‘stone’, ‘rock’.Spanish: habitational name, in some cases from Aro in Galicia, in
others probably from Haro in Rioja.
