The exciting news
this month!
For the first time ever, online, we have London Parish Records going back to 1538. This is way before the
introduction of birth, marriage and death registration, and gives you the chance to research your
London ancestry back to the reign of Henry VIII.
Another fantastic first this month is the Roll of Honour for the British Army plus the British Army Prisoner of War
records. If any of your relatives were either captured or died in action, now you can find
out the true facts.
Lastly, we'd love to hear from you if you've uncovered your
French or German roots - and don't miss the opportunity to win the latest crime thriller by cult author Dan Waddell in our book
competition.
.
Go back even further with London Parish Records |
If you've got London connections these could be the
records you've been waiting for! The London Parish Records go right back to 1538 and open up new
avenues of research. Because they pre-date formal certificates which only go back to 1837, the
parish baptism, marriage and burial records are often the only evidence of a family line. So if
you've hit a dead end in your research so far, these records may hold the key.
Amazing details
The London Parish Records were meticulously kept
by most parishes. Although births weren't recorded until 1837, baptisms were, so even without a
birth certificate, once you find out where a child was baptized you can find out the names of the
parents. With this information you can start piecing together where they lived and where they came
from. From marriage records you'll be able to learn about the maternal side of the family - possibly
going back centuries.
Over 11 million entries
Some of the very earliest entries haven't
survived, but from the 17th century onwards the records are almost complete, with over 11 million
entries. They're held at London Metropolitan Archives and are only available for you to browse
online here.
Records available to search are:
Births and Baptisms, 1813 - 1906
Marriages and Banns, 1724 - 1921
Deaths and Burials, 1813 - 1980
Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538 - 1812
Some of the early records are images only, but searchable name indexes are coming soon.

Find your WWII heroes! |
WWII Roll of Honour
Records
This month marks the 70th anniversary of the start of
WWII, so it's a perfect time to remember the 349,000 people who served and died between 1st
September 1939 and 31st December 1946. Their names are all recorded in the Roll of Honour, together
with specialist information, which has been decoded from the original format. This means you can now
see the details of those killed in action, who died of injuries or disease plus those who died from
natural causes.
You can also find out where they were fighting and
where they were taken when wounded. These details were all painstakingly recorded by the War Office,
using a shorthand system that required a Hollerith machine to read the data. Now they're available
online for the first time, and you can search them here.
PoW British Army
Records
Over 100,000 British soldiers were captured and held
as Prisoners of War in Germany until 30th March 1945. Every one was listed in the British Army
Personnel PoW records, which are also now available online here. So if your ancestors were among the
prisoners, now's the time to find out exactly where and when they were captured, and where they were
held prisoner.

You tell
us |
 |
Last month we asked you if the
website that we created was helpful in showing you the type of records celebrities had been
searching for during the Who Do You Think They Are? Series. Of the people who responded 27%
said they did, 4% said they didn't and 69% said they hadn't visited it yet. You can still see the
site and find out the celebrities' stories at whodoyouthinktheywere.com.
Discovering roots in unexpected places
and ancestors we never knew we had is endlessly fascinating. Now with new records available online,
millions of people around the world are busy uncovering details about their past.
Which brings us to this month's
question:
We recently launched Criminal Registers. If
you have searched them, did you find any family members in the contents?
1. Yes
2. No
3. Not yet!
