Win one of 20 lapel badges

This month, we're really excited about developments here at Ancestry.co.uk that will bring you even closer to your fellow family historians. Plus if you've got clerical ancestors, we've just released a useful new record collection for you to search. You can also peruse the pages of The Gentleman's Magazine online – and be in to win one of 20 lapel badges with Military Heritage.

Discover your clerical ancestors – new to Ancestry.co.uk

Were any of your ancestors members of the clergy? Well, now you can discover a whole host of fascinating background information with the release of Crockford's Clerical Directories – available for the first time online through Ancestry.co.uk.

Crockford's Directories first appeared in 1858 and are still published today, although this release covers dates up to 1932.

Featuring about 250,000 names, the directories contain biographies of UK Anglican clergy and details of English, Welsh and Irish beneficiaries and churches. If your clerical ancestor is featured, you can discover all sorts of in-depth information – such as: where they studied and when they obtained a degree; a work history of where and when they performed their clerical duties; details of any authors and their address at the time of publication.

Searching the records couldn't be easier – the complete collection is fully word searchable, so searching for ‘Olivier' returns the records (below) for Laurence Olivier's father and grandfather who were both clergymen.

Dip into The Gentleman's Magazine – new to Ancestry.co.uk

Have you ever wondered what sort of magazine your ancestors would have read? Well now you can read for yourself, with the online release of The Gentleman's Magazine.

Founded in 1731 by Edward Cave and published monthly until it ceased in 1914, it's a far cry from today's lad magazines. To begin with, it reproduced news, essays and articles from other publications, collating them into a single source. However, as time went on the magazine started to include original material, such as literary critiques and Parliamentary reports.

In 1891 George Gomme republished an enormous amount of these articles but edited and indexed them into county specific order.

The complete collection spans fifteen volumes covering all counties in England, with three entire volumes covering London. So there is a huge amount of information to interest family and local historians, with many records of births, marriages and deaths, as well as biographical and topographical information.

Did you know?

England and Wales - Births, Marriages and Deaths 1837 – 2005

Civil Registration of these vital events began in 1837, at the dawn of the Victorian era and has continued to this day. Birth, Marriage and Death certificates are Public Records and are available to anyone to order, but how do we find them? The answer is to use the General Register Office's indices (known to genealogists of a certain age as ‘St Cath's indexes'). Using the indices you can find an event, order the certificate direct from the Ancestry Shop and take your research back another stage.

In 1998 a charitable organisation called ‘FreeBMD' began a volunteer-driven project to transcribe these records and make them available to all, for free, on the internet.

Previously, to find the record you wanted you had to go to a record office, library or LDS Family History Centre and trawl through miles of microfilm in order to find the record you were so desperately looking for. Ancestry began supporting FreeBMD in 2001 and as the project gained momentum, more and more records have been made available to search for free; both on FreeBMD and on Ancestry.

You'd be interested to know that 97% of members said 'yes' they would, while 2% said 'no' they would not and 1% said they 'didn't know.'

The new series of Who do you think you are? has just started on TV. So this month's question is 'Are you watching the series on TV?'

Yes   No
Didn't know it was on
