Search the UK City and County Directories

UK city & county directories

We’re delighted to announce the addition of the UK City and County Directories to Ancestry.co.uk. They contain a huge amount of information about towns and villages in the UK from 1677 – 1946. They list all sorts of people who had trades, not just business and shop owners, but ordinary people such as gardeners, dressmakers and even chimney sweeps.

7.8 million names at your fingertips
The books are part of the Archive CD books collection and were collected over six years until the company’s owner, Rod Neep, retired. There are an incredible 629 individual directories and they include the entire inventory of directories from the former Family Records Centre. It is estimated that there are at least 7.8 million names on record for you to search. And they even contain some rather well known names too, such as Charles Dickens, as well as former Prime Ministers Benjamin Disraeli and William Gladstone. Unfortunately, due to the amount of different directories in this collection, it is not really possible to include a sample of each type of book. However, if you’d like to find out more about this collection, click here.

This collection is to be completed on Ancestry.co.uk in March 2009. All English counties are currently covered in the collection except Rutland, Leicestershire, Norfolk and Kent which will be covered in the universal directories when complete.

Discover soldiers who died in the Great War

war cementary

Another exciting addition to Ancestry.co.uk is a brand new military database of Soldiers Who Died in the Great War. In 1921 His Majesty's Stationery Office published two lists of those who died during the Great War by authority of the War Office. Just one volume, packed with minute typescript, gave the basic details of nearly 42,000 officer casualties. But it required a staggering eighty more volumes to list over 700,000 names of all the 'other ranks' who gave their lives.

Each of the original volumes represented one or more regiments, corps or other units of the British Army. Most were subdivided into battalions or similar groupings and there were often thirty or more of these per volume, all in alphabetical order. And now we’re extremely fortunate to have obtained all of this valuable information in the form of the new military database. To search this incredible resource for family members who lost their lives so bravely in the Great War click here.
