November 2008

This November marks the 90th anniversary of the end of World War One. And to commemorate the event, we’re proud to announce that we’ve recently updated one of our important War record collections and added a new one to help you discover even more about your World War One ancestors. There’s also the release of the complete UK Incoming Passenger Lists 1878-1960, which gives the names of boat passengers from this period – and the chance to win a fantastic family history murder mystery.

Did your ancestors attend Oxford University?

We’re pleased to announce that we’ve added the latest set of World War One British Army Service Records to our collection. This now covers all surviving records, up to surnames beginning with ‘N’.

We’ll never be able to have a complete record, as many were destroyed during a Luftwaffe raid on the War Office in Arnside Street, London where the records were held. However, painstaking research has meant that millions of records have been transcribed.

To help you find your military ancestors, you can search by name, age, year of birth, residence, regiment and service number. And once you find who you’re looking for, you can discover their own amazing World War One history, including their medical history, war wounds suffered, medals and awards won, marital status, next of kin – even a physical description.

You can read all about people like John Condon, from Waterford, Ireland, who was thought to be the youngest known battle casualty in World War One. When he died in 1915 he is supposed to have been just fourteen and this is recorded on ‘his’ headstone. However, later research not only showed that Condon was in fact between eighteen and twenty years old when he died, but that his grave quite probably contains the remains of an entirely different man, thought to be 6322 Rifleman Patrick Fitzsimmons of The Royal Irish Rifles.

Canadian passenger lists, 1865-1935

Canadian immigrants

This addition to our ever-expanding World War One records gives you another valuable resource if you’re looking for your ancestors – even if they didn’t serve in the military.

The roll outlines biographies of men and women who served the nation during the Great War of 1914-18. Originally published in fourteen volumes, it contains service details of over 100,000 people - from soldiers to factory and hospital workers.

As you’ll see from the list below, there’s a real treasure trove of information to be discovered. Like Evelyn Badger, who ‘was engaged on important duties as a cook with the Royal Engineers’.

“As dawn breaks over a frosty London, the body of a young man is discovered in a Notting Hill churchyard, a cryptic clue carved into his skin.

It is only when the clue is handed to Nigel Barnes, a specialist in compiling family trees, that the full message becomes spine-chillingly clear. For it leads Barnes back more than one hundred years – to the victim of a demented Victorian serial killer…

When a second body is discovered DCI Foster needs Barnes’s skills more than ever. The murderer’s clues appear to run along the tangled bloodlines that lie between 1879 and now and if Barnes is right about his blood-history, the killing has only just begun…”
