Scottish and northern Irish: reduced form of McTaggart, an
Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac an t-Sagairt ‘son of the priest’,
from sagart ‘priest’. Marriage by members of the clergy was
prohibited after the 12th century, but was frequently practised
nevertheless.
