English (chiefly Yorkshire and Lancashire): habitational name from
any of several places so called, of which the largest are in
Lincolnshire, Norfolk, and Suffolk. The place name is from the Old
English personal name Inga + ham ‘homestead’. Some
authorities believe the first element to be a word meaning ‘the
Inguione’, from an ancient Germanic tribe known as the
Inguiones.
