Canadian Records, 1757-1921

In the past few days, we’ve been focussing on one of the most popular destinations for British emigrants – Canada. We’ve released millions of new Canadian records, covering everyone from soldiers to sailors.

We have regimental registers and letters from military headquarters – both focussing on British forces in ‘The True North’ – and two new collections of ships’ muster rolls. Plus, we have the entire 1921 Census of Canada, although it’s not yet fully searchable.

The London Gazette, 1825-1962

We’ve just added nearly 150 years’ worth of the London Gazette. Said to be the oldest surviving newspaper, this can give you invaluable historical context to your family tree – as well as help you confirm names, dates and places.

If there’s a specific date range you’re interested in, simply look up the editions from that time. You may pick up a few useful titbits along the way: details of your ancestors’ estates, official notices of their promotions or military decorations, new British citizenships – or maybe even their bankruptcies!

North Nottinghamshire Register of Voters, 1885

We’ve just added records of the people who could vote in North Nottinghamshire in 1885. Anyone who wasn’t a property owner or lived in a rural area had only just been given the right to vote, so you’ll discover names, dates and places you’d have struggled to find before.

These records are searchable thanks to the efforts of volunteers in our World Archives Project (WAP). You’ll see plenty more WAP releases in the coming weeks, so keep your eyes out!

Occupation Records

We’re focussing on occupation records this week. These popular collections could reveal your ancestors’ complete CVs, with details like the places they worked, the promotions they earned and even the salaries they were paid.

We have comprehensive records covering many of the most common – and important – jobs in British history. Find out whether your relatives laid our first train tracks, delivered our first national post or sailed our first steamships.
